Traditional museum visits often involve viewing two-dimensional artworks from a distance. However, Three States of Home Gazing takes a different approach by allowing viewers to step into the world of Kuo Hsueh-hu's painting "Festival on South Street (1930)" through AR technology. Whether at home or in the museum, viewers can now examine the painting up close and even walk into the virtual reality representation of Taipei's Dadaocheng area in 1930.
What sets this AR experience apart is its seamless integration of technology and art. By extending the viewer's timeline and linking real locations with virtual memories, Three States of Home Gazing creates an emotional and immersive journey. The project not only showcases the artistic brushwork of Kuo Hsueh-hu but also captures the sentimentality of the era and its people.
The AR experience is easily accessible through IOS and Android devices, making it available to a wide range of users. Its highly interactive and bilingual (Chinese and English) interface ensures that every visitor can easily navigate and understand the exhibition. Since its launch, the project has garnered significant participation, reflecting its success in enhancing the overall museum experience and providing a platform for historical and cultural education.
Three States of Home Gazing was developed in Taipei between 2019 and 2020. The project's research focused on preserving and reproducing the cultural heritage of Taiwan through the brushworks of local artists. By creating culturally synchronized sensory experiential designs, the project aims to contribute to local cultural tourism, social welfare, and the sense of belonging and identity among different ethnic groups.
Overcoming the creative and technical challenges of depicting Taiwan's early era through Kuo Hsueh-hu's artworks, Three States of Home Gazing offers viewers a glimpse into the development of art and culture. It not only transforms the museum experience but also provides an opportunity to empathize with the cultural sentiments of past generations.
This groundbreaking AR experience is a collaboration between Hsin-Chien Huang, Wen-Chieh Chang, Chiung-Yi Hsieh, Saiau-Yue Tsau, and the Kuo Hsueh-Hu Foundation. Its unique combination of technology and art has earned it the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Entertainment, Content Creation, and Streaming Media Design category in 2021.
